From Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Epstein Document Release is Mixed.
Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the men shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is quite rich how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively muted after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the congressional vote to enact a law mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that included no previously unseen information.
