The Journey of a Phenomenon is often marked by distinct phases.

1. The Big Idea

A charismatic leader or leaders propose a new and transcendent idea pledging a cure for disconnected individuals.

So here we are. They’re getting ready to storm the compound overseas. Tensions are rising. Smoke is rising from the sidelines. An isolated player, naked, nervous, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT smeared across his chest in chicken blood, has stumbled from the field and is taken aside in secrecy for a temporary assignment at Derbyshire.

Do you ever miss the start, when the world was still young? The days of Bazball 1.0, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Love-Bombing

Cult leaders offer a reboot, hope for a future, camaraderie, success among a group united in belief in the big idea.

What was this thing at first? Just men on a balcony enjoying success. Ink. Forearms. Focus. Peak performance vibes. Oh sure, England’s players will claim it’s not a real term, amusingly since it’s not recognized, what was that spectacle?

Yet it’s clear its essence. It’s the player executing a stroke so depraved it has to be pixelated. It’s the thrill of the leader in his final form, a look that says: thoughtful warrior, rugged appearance, hair woven from beaver hide, genuinely raw you almost imagine to notice and find him positioned at mid-off shirtless and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the opener often seen speaking publicly, out there looking like a cheerful animal smartly dressed, expressing thoughts like we’re breaking down traditions. And yes, the atmosphere, initially, was entirely positive.

3. The Growth Phase

Growth phase. Unity enforced by rote learning of key phrases. These principles can appear contradictory to prove commitment.

Am I alone? The criticism, the outrage, the sense of betrayal after the first Ashes Test defeat seems too strong, overdone. England batted badly during the match, as history shows. They were savaged defensively in a short span when tactics failed, carved around by Travis Head imitating their style effectively, adaptive to conditions, a performer excelling with a kind of light around him.

Currently, we see the pile-on, the frustration, the perception of the team as a failure. The opinion suggests that losing isn’t enough, they must be humbled, to be purged, obliterated, destroyed by the vengeful purity of the bowler’s action, the conventional tactics of the bowler, marking successes with a bashful smile like he’s just been given a rewarding prize. What will this do to them?

4. The Backlash Phase

Issues emerge due to setbacks. However, faults are ignored. It turns to hatred of the outside world.

The fact remains, a few days before from the second Test, we’ve entered a delicious point of tension in the story of this approach. England could quite easily win in Brisbane through aggressive play. Alternatively, failure may follow. Should they fail it appears we may see the final stage.

Before that happens, several aspects to note about this. More than two years ago, at the start, of light and heat, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. People were very angry, which demonstrated since it’s clear the best way of proving lack of cult status is should followers respond with anger rejecting criticism of its truths.

Recent events recently is just as interesting. Criticism of the approach has now become the cult. We have a uniformly angry internet, disappointed commentators, shots of angry middle-aged followers overseas disappointed by the short match, like a room full of people wanting fairness.

Meanwhile, exists the larger scene of Australia’s more nuanced more culturally hard-wired exasperation with the aggressive tourists, claiming, the methods you value and have honed as part of your identity from others, it’s not serious in the end old boy.

Here lies the truth. Everything is a cult. Bazball was a cult as the game has its own culture. Or at least, the team has long been exclusive, a circle, an elite gathering, a restricted environment with centuries of tradition and mystery defining it. The players have been enclosed in this environment for years. Attempting to break free, to foster positivity, they are mirroring their own experience, forming a new circle, a limited community, however with a modern squad and a leader encouraging individuality as long as yourself is quite a lot like myself.

Focus on the moment. Embrace challenges. However much you change, things stay similar.
