Minister States Ministry of Defence Looking at Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Staff Advised to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

A defense minister has confirmed that the MoD is actively examining the possible threats associated with Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been told to refrain from discussing classified matters in all vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

During a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss classified material while riding in Chinese cars.

He stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a concern in every contemporary cars.

We have a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

The broader security environment highlights the significance of robust measures and vigilance in every areas of official activities, including transport usage to discussions habits.
