Revitalized Medvedev Wins First Trophy in 882 Days
Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been earned on hardcourt
A resurgent the Russian player claimed his first title for 882 days with a win over Corentin Moutet in the tournament championship match.
The athlete, a ex- number one, has had a challenging period, managing just one match at the big events and suffering a difficult moment at the US Open.
The player's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in specific - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and eventually separating with long-time mentor Gilles Cervara.
Presently working with Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has steadily advanced in the last few weeks - peaking in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over Frenchman Moutet.
This marks Medvedev's maiden trophy after the Rome competition and initial on a hard surface since spring of that year.
The win also means the Russian has achieved twenty-one victories at twenty-one different tournaments.
"For the first time I'm at a event with my children simultaneously, so to win a title is especially meaningful," said world number 14 the champion.
"This championship is in honour of my second daughter her name, because the first title I achieved when my first daughter her name was delivered was for her."
Medvedev, the former major winner, had failed in his previous six title deciders, featuring in Halle earlier this year.
His retrieving strategy and recurring outbursts on court had caused some to question if his capacity to perform at the highest level was over.
But the athlete has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, striving to approach the net and play aggressively, reinforced by an improved service.
Medvedev recovered from a break down in the first set against the challenging Moutet, securing four of the final five points to go ahead.
The competitors swapped breaks in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his maiden ATP Tour title, gained dominance to create a decider.
He rescued four early-game break points in a tight final set before the Russian won the break to that score to secure the win.
Suitably, Medvedev clinched victory with a rally at the front of the court, with his opponent incapable to manage a shot after a lengthy match.
