TikTok Influencers Driving Parallel Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug
An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Online
The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning effects. Followers are urged to message these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers market the substance there before redirecting customers to other platforms for transactions.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Express Concerns
However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in users administering substances of unknown origin.
Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Enforcement
Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.
Service Reaction and Content Removal
Based on the social media company, the service has removed violative material and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The organization said it was dedicated to keeping the platform safe and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Research also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step instructions for mixing or administering at home.
Within minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. Not one asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.
Product Information and Costs
Within these communities, posts show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Actions
A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly moderated dangerous material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Cautions
“Individuals are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in demand to recent price rises for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.
Her staff has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental product not yet approved … may expose users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
